Lego Serious Play: How could we use it for staff development around TEL?

I had a fine Friday being trained as facilitator for using Lego Serious Play within workshops. A big thanks to Becky Blunk for setting it up.

I’ll admit I was a little sceptical about using Lego. However, my position has shifted. The use of lego as an aid for workshops, and team development activities is really powerful compared with my “typical” approach of individual post-it notes and group flip charts. The point which the facilitator mentioned, which I’d agree with, is the building of models allows a different lens, and there is more opportunity for a strong narrative to be developed by the individual.

The workshop structure is typical … with an ice breaker / induction (build a tower), activities to move from the literal to the metaphor, and group creation activities. The group creation activity offers the opportunity for use to facilitate a curriculum design activity for course teams. For instance, if we had 4 to 7 members of a Departments, plus a member of Learning Services, for a 1.5 hour workshop. We could build up to a group activity which addresses the following questions:

Activity 1: As an individual, build a model which represents

  1. an example of good practice in the use of technology enhanced learning. On a post-it note, write one word which summarises (encapsulates) your model
  2. build a model which represents the key barrier to you being able to implement TEL in your curriculum. On a post-it note, write one word which summarises this barrier

Activity 2: As a group, build a shared model which combines all the individual models.

I’d suggest the next stage aspect needs to be enhanced. For instance, I would encourage the group to summarise the shared model as a written document, which feeds into a development plan with dates and named individuals.

For instance, the outcome of the shared model on Friday is illustrated below. The activity was to develop a shared model of excellent practice in Learning and Teaching at UCS, and the barriers to this spreading across the institutions. As a learning activity within the group it was very powerful, however, post the activity / workshop, the question would be, what do we do with it? where do we take this discussion next?
