All very nice, but not sure I’ll actually take anything from this session.

Look at comment is free from the Guardian … Might be some ideas for how to organise a central space for social dissemination between staff, I.e., stop using Moodle forums, and instead use a blog aggregator. Perhaps go back to the idea of social network software / pageflakes. Sort of networked journalism. There might be some messages to take from this presentation.

Focus on trust in scholarly publishing.

– writing the “internet trust anti-trust” but thinking that the users are starting to question material, I.e., is it trustworthy.

So how are we going to factor this into the equation in terms of what we deliver. Thinking work up ideas on individual blogs, then move towards research repository. This might need us to make clear this mediated material, I.e, a statement about it is peered reviewed by the team.

Also nice link to the earlier discussion about needing to open up authors within the social network. Perhaps we should again make a statement about expectations and trust within this system.

Trust – from socrates to spin

Local trust – established by personal aquaintance.

Global –

Internet trust – local and horizontal
Scholoarly trust – based on instiution, they publish a lot, they can be sanctioned etc.,

So challenge is need to bring these together. Need to create a social trust feedback loop.

So future … Web 2.0 is about trust. Implications, you can subscribe to a person,  I.e. Bookmarks, thinking, writing etc.,

Seeing lots of content, and will become very difficult to figure out what to trust.

Roadmaps … Guidance priorities for BBC staff. So have license to criticise on blogging. Guidenace helps empowerment – so not about letting a 1000 blossoms flower. There is support – guideance.

A challenge for content producers … does it matter if you let your content is taken and rebranded? I,e,m credit etc.,

Things learnt

Regulation – outside pressure to be more outward looking. From the regulatoin is drived it’s remit. So what is the remit of elearning at the University of Bath?

Extend broadcast … iPlayer.

Web as canvas …  Use internet to create public value. So make content available through local / individualised challenges. I.e., going out to where the audience is, and not expecting that the audience comes to use.

Open up your data – so we create things that have been centrally funded, also run services (such as moodle). But we need to make this available to the user.

Identify where are the people?

Accountability – staff discuss the decisions that they have made. Perhaps I need to create a stand alone blog about what is going on – I.e., feedback, and accountabilty.

New skills – look at the skill sets in the team and the culture of the team This might need to change. In the sense the elearning advisers become curators.


Integration … Podpath … Bkog with a radio show attached.

Outcome, it is not about creating a web site, it is about being anywhere. ie., syndication.

Observation –  I quite like the idea of taking a lot of these ideas to help the way elearning disseminates / communicate with our audiences (internal and external).

Web 2.0 is about user contributed content … You put your content into externally hosted web sites. Some risks include;

– Confidentiality (ipr)
– Security
– Reliability – will it be there in 5 years?
– usability
– Accessible
– Data protection

Focus on a few …

– Your web 2.0 service provider goes bust/gets bought. Problem, no revenue model for web 2.0. Ie., what happens when venture capital dries up?

So if issue in terms of needing information then institution will need a copy of this material. So how can this be delivered?

Argument why use well established services such as Google.

Data protection – if using the web 2.0 extenally hosted service then need to ensure that users are aware that being building a relationship with the web technology, I.e., facebook, ning etc.,
