Raw notes – OpenCast Podcasting Conference – Oxford

Adam Hochman – Uni California, Berkeley

Starting to put lots of material on youtube … so how is this manged, do they upload it twice?

re-visiting the system to make it scale – this includes a large investment in physical spaces. Also make the file formats more flexible …  moving away from  providing in Real.

Their objective is given the spend they are very keen to lower barriers to participation. Includes permissions form.

If screencasting then lots is automated, I.e. push the button. Also, it links to the timetable system, and other systems so that lots of metadata is automatically added, I.e., course id, to the audio files. I think this is really interesting.

video capture includes using two people .. so expensive.

Point – they do complete a small bit of editing … trim stuff before going live.

distribution – distribute to three places, webcast, youtube and itunes U –  all very manual, plan to automate in the future. This will be needed because of the issues of providing multiple file formats.

The next gen system is being built with sakai in mind, however … looking also at Moodle. They are interested in other Moodle Institutions.

Note — Berkeley is very centralised, with AV, Podcatsing etc., under one roof. It sounds like a similar model for Bath – find economy of scale for podcast service.

Question … chat with Simon / Pete … are we part of the opencast project? would it be worth joining? who should lead?

Andreas Busch – making lectures portable

seems to be focusing on sceencasting the lectures and other face to face sessions.

used profcast software (initially).  – started over 18 months

Question – need to look into the use of camtasiacast …. is this the way forward for a none mac solution. Alternatively, can we upload the files to the LMF.

evaluation … it appears that students asked questions via email … would like to make this more open, I.e., discussion board, sms, twitter.

how it changed my lectures?

1. used more visuals – otherwise an enhanced podcasts are boring. – need to ensure that they are freely to use if they are being used. This creates extra burden of work.
2. less room for improvisation – so more careful planning is required.

Key to success –  staff, make it easy, make it enjoyable, need to be brought in at early stage.

Filming for podcasting 101

oxford internet institute –

session looking a between the camera and the audience. preparation;

legal issues … speaker permissions, audience permissions, and copyright for materials.

is the talk interesting? live verses recorded – tend to find that live was not watched so ould be worth going for a recorded approach.

lots of tips … have a look at the slide, a really good example of poor practice.

in terms of audience permission then make clear at the start, and get permission after the event – given tend to have only a few. in terms of capturing the question then repeat, or use sms/twitter.

take a couple of days between capture and putting up on the web. Support on how to capture.

Sustainable Podcasting – OSS Watch

sustainable podcast network – the conversations network.

question – need to make oss watch aware of the podcasting sig, so can make reference to this. In terms of the idea of sustainability.

Action: write blurb on blog about the PPP – answer key questions raised by the floor, support, development, examples.

thoughts for me – what is the usp of the community?

focus on sustainable open source projects – all very interesting but what use is this for me ? Not getting much out of this session.

large scale project courses with podcasts

problem based solution …. help !!! where is this going.

Apple Computers – daniel pham – iTunes U

action – look at the idea of creating a university of bath presence on iTunes U –  trinity college looks like a really nice example with good linking to other web resources.

UCL have included interviews with key people.

Also look at OU’s course.

interesting model that we’d locally host the content, and iTunes is given the rss feed.

Podcasting at Oxford

have created a portal – podcasts.ox.ac.uk – very devolved manner.

would like to produce a workflow for an individual lecturer at Bath who wishes to podcast material. Need to set a definition of what is podcasting, I.e, subscription, plus download – but do we include stream. Also, how about distribution …

1. capture
2. processing
3. storage
4. distribution
5. archive
6. issue

CAMtv

assume that will never have media on central servers, or even held within the university. therefore, have developed a database for the media and are trying to motivate and incentives the all staff to use it. I rather like this model … something for Bath to learn? includes simple push into different distribution routes as well as pulling stuff from youtube etc.,

very lite approach, but could bolt into institutional repositiories

all in demonstrator stage … worth thinking about in the future.

I just feel this is so appropriate to the culture of Bath, and will allow us to give a clear road map.

virtpresenter – marcus

runs on windows (yippee … this was getting rather mac focussed). simple way of capturing and distributing captured lectures. Like ProfCast or Podcast Producer.

worth a look, and disseminate to Simon in AV. See if they might be interested in using. Perhaps we could trial it on our tablets?

virtpresenter – virtUOS – I think, missed the start because I was twittering … so I can’t multi tasks 🙂

I wonder, seeing we can access parts of the package, perhaps we could look at the capture end of the software, so can put this in a lecture. Then move the file to the LMF or a streaming server or wherever … in fact use the CamTV approach. We could pix and mix the solution for our local context.

replay eth zurich

a capture lecture approach.

thought from me … many presentations discussed the use of podcasting stations … this sounds like an expensive solution. Perhaps we should keep to a screencast option for lectures, unless public lectures then include camera etc.,

timeline … start to connect around spring 09 when version 1.0 is due for release.
